The One Trick That Transformed My Skin

Snapchat filters and Facetune smoothers be damned, the number one question I get in real life and online is how I keep my skin looking great. While there are many things that contribute to healthy radiant skin there is one standout tip that has the potential transform your skin overnight - oil.  More specifically the Oil Cleansing Method.

The Oil Cleansing Method, or OCM for beauty insiders, was introduced to me by a friend in college. Her skin was always gorgeous but one day she mentioned that her glow was due to cleansing her face with a combination of oils. Naturally I had to try this magical method right away and let me tell you, it's amazing.

Hesitant? Know that oil dissolves oil. All of the nasty grease that's hardened with impurities in your pores will be drawn out ultimately leaving your skin clear, smooth, and blemish-free. Here's how it works.

The Oil

You are going to make a custom mix of two oils according to your skin needs. Castor oil naturally cleanses your pores so think of this as your "soap." If your skin is oily castor oil should be about 30% of your mixture, for balanced or combination skin 20%, 10% if your skin is dry. Your second oil will be the "water" to your "soap," helping the castor oil to glide over the skin, seep into your pores, and moisturize your face. Nutritious oils like olive, sunflower seed, and avocado are excellent choices.

The Process

Grab a luxurious thick washcloth, turn on some hot water, and have your oil mixture ready. Pour a quarter-sized amount of oil into the palm of your hand and massage it in for a few minutes. I like to make everything an experience so I may put on some calm music and light a candle at this point, a spa vibe never hurts!

In slow firm circles continue to massage imagining that the oil is lifting all of the dirt, dead skin cells, and impurities up and out. When you're satisfied, take your washcloth and run it under the hot water then place it over your face. The goal is to steam your pores open before gently wiping away the dirty oil. Take your time and be kind to your skin - no need to scrub - just rinse the washcloth, steam, wipe and repeat until all the oil is off.

The Result

You're clean! You should notice a slight glow immediately. If afterwards your skin feels a bit tight take a tiny drop of your moisturizing oil and pat it into your face. Think of this as a deep treatment for your skin; indulge in this ritual once a week and adjust frequency according to your needs. As with anything, over time results accumulate so be patient.
